What is the definition of "freelance writer" for you? I didn't realize all the connotations the term could have until I recently received a candid comment from someone regarding his views on freelancers as opposed to bloggers. My new friend has found that freelance writers often move on to other, more profitable projects rather than blogging.
I hadn't considered the difference between freelance writers and bloggers. In my mind, freelance writing can comprise of any avenue that uses one's writing skills. Writing for consumer magazines, trade publications, journals, web sites. Writing web copy, writing for commercial purposes, script writing, writing ebooks. Yes, and blogging.
Apparently, folks define the term differently. Even if they haven't developed a formal definition, people perceive the term "freelance writer" in different ways. What's your experience with this? How do you define "freelance writer"?

I guess I figure that one can be called a 'freelance' writing if they're getting paid for it. Even bloggers can receive compensation via network ads, affiliate marketing, or endorsements for product/service reviews.
I have a weekly column at an online social network, but I don't receive monetary compensation for it, so I don't know how much weight it actually carries in my pursuits as a writer. However, as it does help drive traffic to my blog, I will keep plugging away at it.
