Another Giveaway for Writers

posted by marybabysteps on Mon, 11/17/2008 - 12:37pm

I have another great giveaway for you all.  This time, it's a package of e-books from Carolyn Howard-Johnson.  Carolyn is an award winning author who has generously donated her How To Do It Frugally series of e-books.  These helpful reads include:

The Frugal Book Promoter: How To Do What Your Publisher Won't - In this book, Carolyn talks about ways to promote your book for very little money and shares reasons why you may be a better promoter of your work than any PR professional.

The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Foot Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success -  This book will help you turn in fabulous, error-free copy every time.  We can certainly all use a little help in this area.  I know I certainly can.

The Great First Impression Book Proposal: Everything You Need to Know to Sell Your Book in 20 Minutes or Less - This one's great for those looking to impress potential editors and get the book deal.  I think I better get this one if I ever decided to pursue the book route with my mom bloggers project.  I've interviewed more than 20 moms about how blogging has impacted their lives, and I've heard some amazing stories.  I think these stories really could be a book, but the process seems so overwhelming.

Here's a bit about Carolyn, so you know a bit about the amazing woman behind these books.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson's first novel, This Is the Place, won eight awards. Her second book, Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered, creative nonfiction, won three. Her chapbook of poetry Tracings, was named to the Compulsive Reader's Ten Best Reads list and was given the Military Writers' Society of America's Silver Award of Excellence. An instructor for UCLA Extension's world-renown Writers' Program, her book The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't is recommended reading for her classes, and was named USA Book News' "Best Professional Book 2004." It is also an Irwin Award winner. Her second book in the How To Do It Frugally series is The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success is also a USA Book News award-winner as well as the winner of the Reader View's Literary Award in the publishing category. She is the recipient of both the California Legislature's Woman of the Year in Arts and Entertainment Award and the Glendale American Business Women's Association's Woman of the Year award. Her community's Character and Ethics Committee honored her for promoting tolerance with her writing. She was also named to Pasadena Weekly's list of 14 "San Gabriel Valley women who make life happen." She is a popular speaker and actor. Her website is www.HowToDoItFrugally.com.

So, do you want to know how to enter?  It's easy; I want to give away as many great resources as I can here at Adventures in Freelancing.  All you have to do is leave me a comment telling me which book you feel you would benefit most from and why. Don't worry, though.  You'll receive all of the great books in the series if your entry is randomly chosen.  Just leave your comment by Monday, November 24th by noon EST to be entered to win. Good luck!

I think I would benefit most from the promotion and the proposal books. I already have a fantastic editor but I was not coached well on book promotion the first time. I am working on new manuscripts and considering using a new publisher next time.

I would do best with the Frugal Book Promoter. My publisher is terrific but small press, so we sort of work in a partnership for promotion. This book would give me ideas.

I love the propsal book. I think too the doing what your publisher won't would be really helpful for me as I begin putting together ebooks of my article content I've been writing all these years.

I think that I would benefit more from the Frugal Editor at the moment than from the others. Don't get me wrong - all three books would be extremely helpful. I think editing my Nano book from this year is going to be a long process and ideas and hints from Carol would be a great help!

I actually DO know those books, I think they're referenced in the excellent "How to become a famous writer before you're dead", but I could be wrong.

Without a doubt, it would be the Frugal Editor I'd want most. Editing is a real challenge for me, unlike the writing part Smiling Any tips are extremely useful for me. AND doing a final edit on my novel is on deck for me by year's end. They ALL are extremely beneficial books to me, though.

Great site!

I think The Frugal Editor would be the best one for me because I have a hard time editing. Besides for a few typos I always think most of my writing is right on, but I know that probably isn't the case.

I wonder if the book promotion would help me promote my freelance writing?

It I win a book, I would like the Frugal Book Promoter. I have an older copy of the Frugal Editor and an e-copy of the proposal book.
